1980's Happy Meal Toys and Promotions (UK)

The story of 1980s Happy Meal toys in the UK isn’t entirely straightforward. While McDonald’s introduced the Happy Meal in the United States as early as 1979, the UK timeline is less clear.

According to official McDonald’s UK history, the Happy Meal was introduced in the UK in 1986 but some earlier promotions suggest the idea may have been taking shape before then. One example is the Spaceship toy set from 1984, which is often cited (including in McDonald’s Collectibles – The Definitive Guide) as the first UK Happy Meal toy. This has led to some debate among collectors as to when Happy Meal toys truly began in the UK.
